Top Things to Do in Yosemite National Park
Yosemite National Park is a breathtaking destination that offers visitors a chance to experience the beauty of nature up close. From towering granite cliffs to cascading waterfalls, there's no shortage of things to see and do in Yosemite. But with so many stunning sights to see, it can be hard to know where to start. If you're planning a trip to Yosemite this guide will help you plan your visit and make the most of your time in the park.
Plan in Advance
Yosemite National Park is one of the most popular national parks in the country so it’s important to start planning your trip ahead of time. The park is open year-round, but some areas may be closed during certain seasons due to weather conditions. Check the park's website for up-to-date information on road closures and trail conditions, and make reservations early as lodging options within the park can fill up quickly. You might also want to consider purchasing a National Parks Pass if you plan on visiting other parks throughout the year.

When to Visit
Yosemite National Park is a beautiful destination year-round, but the best time to visit depends on your interests and preferences. If you're looking to avoid crowds and enjoy cooler temperatures, consider visiting in autumn or winter. Spring and summer bring larger crowds but offer warmer weather and more outdoor activities. Keep in mind that some areas of the park may be closed during certain seasons, so be sure to check the park's website before booking your trip.
What to Pack
Packing for a trip to Yosemite National Park can be tricky, especially if it's your first time visiting. It's important to pack for the activities you plan on doing, as well as the different weather conditions you may encounter. Some essentials to consider packing include comfortable hiking shoes, layers for fluctuating temperatures, sunscreen, bug spray, and a reusable water bottle. If you plan on camping overnight when visiting the park you’ll also want to remember any camping and outdoor gear you’ll need.
Ranger-Led Activities
One of the best ways to experience Yosemite National Park is through ranger-led programs and activities. These programs are designed to educate visitors about the park's natural and cultural history, as well as provide opportunities for recreation and exploration. From guided hikes to stargazing programs, there is something for everyone. Be sure to check the park's website or visitor centre for a schedule of events and make reservations in advance, as some programs fill up quickly.
Must-See Sights
The park is home to many iconic attractions that should not be missed. Some of the most popular include Yosemite Valley, Half Dome, El Capitan, and Glacier Point. Each of these attractions offers unique experiences, from hiking to scenic viewpoints to rock climbing. Be sure to plan your itinerary ahead of time to make the most of your visit to these must-see spots.
Yosemite Valley
Yosemite Valley offers some of the most beautiful views in the park. The towering granite cliffs, cascading waterfalls, and lush forests are truly awe-inspiring. One of the best ways to experience the valley is by taking a scenic drive along the valley floor. You'll pass by iconic landmarks like Half Dome and El Capitan, and you'll have plenty of opportunities to stop and take in the views. If you're feeling more adventurous, lace up your hiking boots and hit the trails. There are hikes for all skill levels, from easy strolls to challenging treks. Whether you're a nature lover or an adrenaline junkie, Yosemite Valley has something for everyone.
El Capitan
El Capitan is one of the most iconic landmarks within Yosemite National Park. This massive granite rock formation stands at 914m (3,000 ft) tall and is a bucket list item for rock climbers from around the world. Even if you're not a climber, you can still appreciate the beauty of El Capitan from the valley floor. There are several viewpoints where you can get a great view of this impressive rock formation, including El Capitan Meadow and Tunnel View. If you're lucky, you may even spot some climbers making their way up the rock face.
Half Dome
Half Dome is a popular destination for serious hikers and a must-see attraction for any visitor. This granite dome rises nearly 1520m (5,000 ft) above the valley floor and offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape. The Half Dome Trail is a strenuous 22-26 km (14-16 mi) round-trip hike that includes a steep ascent up the dome's famous cables. The panoramic view from the top is simply breathtaking and offers a unique perspective of the park. Permits are required to hike to the top of Half Dome and can be obtained through a lottery system.
For those who prefer a less strenuous option, the Half Dome Village offers a comfortable viewing area for visitors to take in the beauty of this natural wonder. And if you want to learn more about the history and geology of Half Dome head to the Yosemite Museum.
Tunnel View
Tunnel View is one of the most photographed spots in Yosemite National Park. From this point visitors can see a panoramic view of Yosemite Valley, including El Capitan, Half Dome, and Bridalveil Falls. It's a must-see spot when visiting the park whether it’s your first or 50th time.
Tunnel View is easily accessible by car, located just off Wawona Road. There is a large parking area and a short walk to the viewpoint. The best time to visit is during sunrise or sunset when the light hits the granite cliffs and waterfalls creating a golden glow. But even during the day the view is still amazing. Don’t forget your camera!
Glacier Point
Another highlight of Yosemite National Park is Glacier Point. This popular viewpoint offers stunning panoramic views of some of the park's landmarks, including Half Dome, Yosemite Valley, and Yosemite Falls. Popular for sunrise and sunset photography as well as stargazing, the viewpoint is accessible by car or by hiking the 6.4km (4 mi) trail from the valley floor.
Glacier Point also offers a variety of other hiking trails for visitors to explore. The Panorama Trail is a popular choice, taking hikers on a 13.7km (8.5 mi) journey from Glacier Point to the Yosemite Valley floor. Along the way, you'll pass by Illilouette Falls and Nevada Falls, as well as stunning views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. For those looking for a shorter hike, the Sentinel Dome Trail is a 3.5km (2.2 mi) round trip that offers 360-degree views from the top of a granite dome.
Waterfalls
Yosemite is home to some of the most stunning waterfalls in the world. The park boasts over 20 waterfalls, with the most famous being Yosemite Falls. Made up of three separate falls: Upper Yosemite Falls, Middle Cascades, and Lower Yosemite Falls, the total height of the falls is 740m (2,425 ft), making it the tallest waterfall in North America. The trail to Yosemite Falls is a flat, easy hike that's suitable for all skill levels, so it's a great activity for those who don’t fancy anything too strenuous.
Other must-sees include Bridalveil Falls, Vernal Falls, and Nevada Falls. The waterfalls are at their peak flow during the spring when the snowmelt from the mountains causes the water flow to swell. However, even during the summer and autumn the falls are still impressive.
Tioga Road
If you're looking for a scenic drive, Tioga Road will take you through the heart of Yosemite National Park. The 74km (46 mi) stretch of road is only open during the summer months (usually late May to early November) and offers stunning views of the park's high country. Along the way you'll pass by Tuolumne Meadows, a vast expanse of alpine meadows and granite peaks, and Tenaya Lake, a crystal-clear lake surrounded by towering granite cliffs. Be sure to stop at Olmsted Point for stunning views of Half Dome and the surrounding mountains.
Mariposa Grove
Mariposa Grove is home to over 500 mature giant sequoia trees, some of which are over 3,000 years old. The grove is the largest concentration of giant sequoias in Yosemite National Park and is a must for nature lovers. The most famous tree in the grove is the Grizzly Giant, estimated to be over 1,800 years old. Visitors can take a relaxed stroll on the boardwalk trail to view the many other impressive trees in the grove like the California Tunnel Tree, which you can walk right through.
Mariposa Grove offers a visitor centre with exhibits on the history and ecology of the grove. Guided tours are available for those who want to learn even more about these magnificent trees, or for the more adventurous, there are longer hikes that take you deeper into the grove.
