Sydney Australia Packing List

Packing for a trip to Sydney doesn’t need to be a headache. Whether you’re heading to the famous beaches, cramming your days with sightseeing, getting out into nature or just enjoying a bit of everything, this packing guide has you covered. We’ll look at what you’ll need for every season as well as the essentials you don’t want to forget!

Sydney’s style can be described as casual but stylish. A relaxed but put-together look is most popular in this city by the coast. When visiting you’ll want to bring comfortable outfits for walking and exploring but still have some dressier options for dining out. Think lightweight fabrics and sandals, but remember to pack a few layers as the weather can be unpredictable depending on the time of year. If you’re planning to embrace the coastal walks and outdoor activities don’t forget to throw in some active wear too. Sydney has a mild, temperate climate but the weather can vary greatly depending on the season. And don’t underestimate the humidity!

Summer (Dec-Feb)

Summer in Sydney can get quite hot with temperatures averaging between 25-35°C (77-95°F). The humidity often surprises visitors too, getting close to 70% in February.

Essentials for Summer:

  • Light, breathable clothing - Dresses, skirts, shorts, t-shirts and singlets (tank tops)

  • Comfortable sandals or lightweight sneakers for exploring and thongs (flip-flops) for the beach

  • Bathing suit, coverup and hat

  • Light layers for when temperatures dip in the evening

Autumn/Fall (Mar-May)

Autumn temperatures are very pleasant in Sydney, ranging from 15-25°C (59-77°F). The humidity also drops to more comfortable levels at this time of year.

  • Sneakers, flats or other closed-toed shoes work well in the changeable autumn weather

  • A light jumper (sweater) or jacket is useful for cooler temperatures at the start and end of the day

  • Raincoat or Umbrella - Autumn often brings occasional unexpected rain showers

WINTER (JUN-AUG)

Thankfully, winter in Sydney is usually mild but it can get chilly at times, especially in the evenings. Temperatures during the day average 10-18°C (50-64°F).

Essentials for Winter:

Sydney Packing List Essentials

No matter the season there are a few things you should always bring along when visiting Sydney. Don’t panic if you forget something though, there's no shortage of stores where you can pick up anything you missed.

Sunglasses

An (almost) year-round essential for visits to Sydney. The sun is strong in Australia and you’ll want to protect your eyes. Even better if they are polarised to help with the glare if you’re spending time by the water.

What to Wear In Sydney - Sun Protection

Sunscreen

The sun in Australia is no joke, we have one of the highest UV indexes in the world. Sun protection is a must, especially in the warmer months, and not just when you’re at the beach. Layer on high-SPF sunscreen (30-50+ and don’t forget the SPF lip balm) to prevent sun damage or a nasty sunburn.

Insect RepellEnt

Insects can be a problem if you’re heading outside the city, into nature or even dining outdoors in the evening. Protect yourself from mosquitos and other biting insects with some insect repellent and avoid the itch.

Australian Power Adaptor

Australian outlets are Type 1, 240V making them incompatible with electronics from some overseas countries. Make sure to pack a power adaptor for your charging cables, hair tools or any devices you’re bringing from home. A power strip or multi-port USB charger can also be useful if you need to charge multiple devices at once.

Dry Bag

A dry bag or waterproof pouch will be useful if you are planning to spend time at the beach, go boating, or do water-based activities during your visit. It will keep your valuables such as your phone or wallet safe and dry while you enjoy your day.

Sydney Packing List - Tote

Reuseable Shopping Bag

Plastic bags have been banned in Sydney since 2022. A tote bag or lightweight fold-up shopping bag that can be carried in your handbag or day pack has a multitude of uses and come come in very handy.

Packing for a visit to Sydney can be simple. Remember to follow the tips above to make sure you’re packing to suit the season and don’t forget the Sydney essentials that you’ll need no matter when you’re visiting. With these items in your bag all you need to think about is enjoying your trip!
